Olmiite, N'Chwaning II Mine, Cape Province, South Africa, Page - 1 |
|
By now many of you have heard of the new olmiites from South Africa. They are exceptionally good for the
species and like all pockets vary in the degree of crystal size, color, aesthetics and lack of damage, all
of which are well represented here. This small handful of specimens is the best to near best of what came to
Tucson whereas the mid-range material ended up with latecomers. To show the deep pinkish red we used
halogen light in at least one image during photography.

Large stunningly bright pinkish red olmiites reaching 2 cm in length sit nicely against lustrous white calcite
and tiny balls of oyelite. Highly exposed crystals of this size were of limited supply, a very 3 dimensional
specimen in person. Excellent miniature without damage.

In terms of overall aesthetic appeal, this one is probably my favorite. All three minerals rest on matrix unlike
others from the find. The doubly terminated gem quality calcite and rich pink/red crystal is in excellent
condition, olmiite measures 1.6 x 1.6 cm. Lots of snow-white oyelite too.

Two highly lustrous pinkish red olmiites of 2 cm long sit side by side upon white calcite matrix, plus these
crystals have translucent areas that greatly help the piece as well. The kind of miniature we would
dream about before this new find. Some small oyelites balls are in association.

Easily one of the finest miniature specimens of the species ever offered for sale. These could be divided
into three types, aggregated spheres of crystals, large white crystals from earlier finds, and these new large
pinkish red crystals now available. At the present time, the spherical type and the style shown rank high, but
the white crystals retain little value as only attractive olmiites sell; however, in terms of rarity, I place strong
emphasis on such large colorful crystals as this 2.7 cm beauty. Furthermore, its elevated faces from every side
jump out from clinging calcite and oyelite coated matrix giving the main olmiite exceptional depth. I have no
doubt that these stunning specimens will be classic mineralogical collectibles for centuries to come, so why
not buy a superb one today! No damage.

Very fine trio of nearly equal size, 1.9 cm to be exact, hanging from a ridge of complimenting white calcite
and oyelite matrix. Each diamond-shaped olmiite is in absolutely pristine condition, which is a small miracle
given its elevated faces in harms way, not all were so lucky from this find. Aesthetic miniatures with three
good sized crystals were uncommon. Spectacular!

Incredibly well formed flower-like pinkish olmiite of 1.7 x 1.7 cm sits smack-dab in the center of calcite and
oyelite marix. Exquisite thumbnail/toenail that has highly glassy faces in person. Undamaged.
