Dioptase, Omaue Mine, Kaokoveld, Namibia, Page - 1 |
|
These exceptionally rich green dioptase specimens were discovered only a week before the recent Munich
show. During the chaos of this huge event, I managed to secure this hidden batch from under one of the
jillions of tables spread throughout four large halls. The well-known Kaokoveld locality has produced material
in recent years, but this brand new pocket is not what we are use to seeing, quite dissimilar in appearance.
All feature pleasing white calcite, and some even have stalactites which at no time I have seen from here,
incredibly rare association! Aesthetically speaking these sharp crystals, of eye popping appeal, dot the matrix
in such a way they are somewhat reminiscent of the few beauties from Tsumeb that exhibit ample contrast.
Without question this contemporary find is as good as it gets for the locale and a must have!

Three main green dioptase crystals reach up to 1.5 cm in length at the upper section of this flat small

approach in real life. Spectacular for the size range, in good condition.

S11047 - Dioptase with Calcite - $1100 SOLD
Omaue Mine, Kaokoveld, Namibia
Overall Size: 3.1 x 2 cm

An outright shocking large thumbnail! The dioptases sit frozen in white calcite as if they were wrapped
by matrix on the backside, a kind of "jacket" effect. Several angles can be used to pinpoint that
preferred display, all of which show both crystals very well. The longest xl measures 1.6 cm.

S11048 - Dioptase with Calcite - $6500
Omaue Mine, Kaokoveld, Namibia
Overall Size: 10.7 x 8.5 cm

|
|
Outlandish large plate of dioptase! From one of the world famous deposits for the mineral comes these super
gemmy and glassy rich deep green crystals up to a nice 2.1 cm in length over abundant calcite matrix. Such
a specimen from Tsumeb would bring serious money, but examples, for the most part, are of a caliber we
only dream about. Considering production has stopped at the legendary mine, and this pocket is available, I
would suggest grabbing one! Only a small handful of places have produced exquisite pieces of the species.
What I particularly appreciate is its good crystal size on contrasting matrix. This champion dioptase is quite
an eyeful of beauty and great buy for the collector! No damage.

Wow! How many of us have seen a 3.7 cm long stalactite of calcite with emerald-green dioptase from
Kaokoveld before? This could go into the ultra rare category. Not unheard of as miners working at
Tsumeb during the mid 1970's encountered some. Are there 5-10 fine pieces in existence? I don't
know, but the total number has to be very small.

S11059 - Dioptase with Calcite - $3800
Omaue Mine, Kaokoveld, Namibia
Overall Size: 6.2 x 4.8 cm
|
|
|
|
|
Big fat juicy green dioptase measuring exactly 2.4 cm tall! Its jumbo crystal leaps out from others in the
lot on account of incredible relief from a swelling bed of calcite, a feature many advanced collectors
appreciate in matrix examples. In general specimens from worldwide localities can be found on the
internet and at shows, yet it is quite difficult to come across a near one inch crystal attached to any
rock. Another beneficial thing is the value. A great rock! 6.2 x 4.8 cm in size.

Exquisite miniature of dioptase with calcite stalactite. This combo could go into the ultra rare category.
Not unheard of as miners working at Tsumeb during the mid 1970's encountered some. Are there
5-10 fine pieces in existence? I don't know, but the total number has to be very small. The three well
formed rich green crystals up to 1.7 cm in length hang from both sides of a snow-white stalactitic
ridge making the piece one of the only examples. Unique character.
